Halloween Food I - Candy Apple & Caramel Apple

Food is necessary for every festival, so it is for Halloween. Trick-or-treat is the tradition of Halloween. There are various kinds of treats on Halloween. Let’s find out what is usually prepared on that day. Candy apple or caramel apple is a common treat on Halloween, because this kind of autumn festival falls in the wake of the annual apple harvest.

Candy Apples
Candy apple is made by coating an apple with a sugar layer. The most common sugar coating is made from sugar, corn syrup, water, cinnamon and red food coloring. The sugar syrup is created by boiling the ingredients in a saucepan. The liquid should reach about 300 °F (150 °C) on a candy thermometer. Dip the apple with the sugar in the "hard crack" stage. The sugar will harden within an hour. Humid weather prevents the sugar from hardening.

Caramel Apples
Caramel apples are created by dipping or rolling apples on a stick in hot caramel, sometimes then rolling them in nuts or other small savories or confections, and allowing them to cool. Generally, they are called caramel apples when only caramel is applied and taffy apples for when there are further ingredients such as peanuts applied.

Apple Bobbing
Apple bobbing is a popular game which is often played on Halloween. The game is played by filling a tub or a large basin with water and putting apples in the water. Because apples are less dense than water, they will float at the surface. Players (usually children) then try to catch one with their teeth. Using of hands is not allowed, and hands are often tied behind the back to prevent cheating.
